Why You Should Invest Your Tax Refund into Your Oral Health

April 4, 2022

In just a few days, the federal tax-filing deadline will arrive, and soon after you’ll have some decisions to make. A tax refund can be exciting since it often means cash that you don’t have to use on your normal expenditures. There are all sorts of things you could spend it on, but many people tend to blow it on items they don’t really need. One option you could definitely benefit from is investing in your oral health. Continue reading to learn from your dentist in Conyers a few reasons why putting your tax refund into your oral health makes a lot of sense!

Put Yourself in Position to Save Money in the Long Run

Many oral health problems only get worse with time when left untreated. Having a filling now could save you from needing a root canal or extraction in the future. By warding off gingivitis early on, you can prevent irreversible issues associated with gum disease like gum recession, loose teeth, tooth loss, and jawbone deterioration. This means saving yourself time, discomfort, oral health risks, and money.

Enhance Your Appearance

A dentist’s number-one priority is making sure your mouth is in good health, but they also want you to be confident when showing off your smile. When you feel great about the appearance of your teeth, you can be more successful in other aspects of your life.

Whether you are getting back out in the dating scene, searching for a new job, or trying to expand your social circle, you’ll have better luck if you are feeling confident. Even if your oral health is excellent, you still have cause to invest in your smile for cosmetic reasons. Self-confidence can take you far in life!

Protect Yourself from Future Medical Issues

When thinking about oral hygiene, you are generally focused on the health of your teeth and gums. What you may not know is just how much your oral health and overall health have in common. They are directly related to each other in several ways.

Poor dental health is associated with numerous serious issues including oral cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, dementia, and early labor for pregnant women. By addressing oral health issues, you are also protecting the rest of your body.

It’s not every day you get an extra check in the mail, so why not invest in something you will truly benefit from? By putting your tax refund into your oral health, your wallet, smile, and the rest of your body will reap the benefits!

Cosmetic Dentistry: How Long Does It Last?

March 4, 2022

Having white teeth seems like part of everyone’s dream smile! The treatments can provide you a new and improved look as well as boost your confidence in the long run. But how long does cosmetic dentistry last? Read on to learn about several options and their lifespan, and the best practices for making the most of them.

Teeth Whitening

This is one of the most common and convenient forms of cosmetic dentistry. Your dentist can provide you with either an at-home whitening kit or an in-office procedure that can brighten your smile in one visit. In both cases, the aim is to address any stains or blemishes on your teeth through a bleaching process. Though you might find similar OTC products at your local store, they won’t be as strong or safe as the components your dentist can offer. Depending on your dental hygiene, teeth whitening can last from six months to three years.

Direct Bonding

In addition to brightening your smile, direct bonding is also designed to repair minor imperfections in your smile. From discoloration to damage or decay, the composite resin used can treat and reshape your pearly whites to make them as good as new. With the proper care, this treatment has a life expectancy of eight to 15 years.

Porcelain Veneers

If you’re considering completely changing and enhancing your smile, then you might consider dental veneers. Not only are they stain resistant and keep your teeth whitened, but they can cover up most flaws—such as chipped, broken, or misaligned teeth. They’ll still have to be preserved with good dental hygiene, otherwise you can risk tooth decay and gum disease. Doing so can help preserve them for 15 years or more.

Maintaining Your Smile

Whichever cosmetic dental treatment you choose, there are several ways you can ensure they last as long as possible. These methods include:

  • Brushing and flossing daily.
  • Limiting sugary and acidic foods.
  • Avoiding tobacco products.
  • Visiting your dentist at least twice a year.

Since cosmetic dentistry offers health benefits along with an aesthetic makeover, it’s important to make the most of them with these few tips. Consult your dentist if you’re interested, and they’ll be more than happy to discuss your treatment options and the best practices to maintain them!

5 Ways to Protect Your Smile During the Holidays

December 15, 2021

The holiday season is officially in full swing! Many people are looking forward to all the traveling, gift-giving, quality time spent with loved ones, and (of course) countless opportunities to feast on seasonal meals and treats. Although it’s okay to put your responsibilities on hold for a bit this season, you shouldn’t neglect your oral health. With that in mind, a dentist in Conyers shares a few ways you can protect your smile during the holidays.

Eat Candy Canes in Moderation

Everyone knows that sugar can have detrimental effects on your teeth. Well, candy canes are composed primarily of it. During the holidays, it may seem impossible to avoid them as well. The good news is that you don’t have to forego them completely! You can still enjoy them as long as it’s in moderation. While eating a candy cane, be sure to bite carefully. Otherwise, you can crack or chip a tooth and experience a dental emergency. Don’t forget to clean your teeth thoroughly after indulging in one as well!

Stay Hydrated

Soda, wine, and juice are popular beverages that you can find at almost any holiday party. Unfortunately, none of them are good for your teeth. The sugary and acidic drinks can increase your risk of decay, cavities, and even gum disease. Instead, opt for plain water whenever possible – it’ll hydrate you and rinse away any lingering food particles. If you must drink something bubbly, reach for sugar-free sparkling water.

Follow a Healthy Diet

Holiday parties are notorious for having an abundance of treats that are no good for your teeth. However, not all food is bad for you. Skip the dessert and fill up your plate with veggies like broccoli and carrots. Not only are they great for your teeth, but they can benefit your overall health. It may surprise you to learn that turkey is another holiday food that’s excellent for your teeth. It’s a great source of phosphorus and protein, both of which can strengthen your pearly whites!

Don’t Use Your Teeth as Tools

If you’re struggling to crack open some nuts, you may be tempted to use your teeth. However, you should avoid doing that at all costs. The hard surface of most nutshells can result in serious tooth and gum damage. Instead, wait for the proper tool or ask someone else for a helping hand!

Prepare a Dental Care Travel Kit

Are you traveling this holiday season? Make sure you prepare a dental care travel kit that contains a toothbrush, dental floss, and mouthwash. Even if you’re staying away from home for just one night, you’ll need to have your essentials on hand to practice your oral hygiene routine.

Don’t forget to prioritize your oral health this holiday season. By following the tips outlined above, you can keep your smile in its very best shape while enjoying the time spent with loved ones!

How to Tell If You Need a Dental Filling?

May 19, 2021

Did you know that tooth decay is one of the most prevalent health problems in the world? In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 90% of adults over the age of 20 have had at least one cavity in their lives. As common as cavities are, it can be difficult to discern whether you need dental fillings in Conyers to treat them. Keep an eye out for these signs that you need a filling.

What Are Dental Fillings?

Dental technology has come a long way in the past few decades – no longer do you have to get a noticeable piece of metal placed in your tooth to fill a cavity. Tooth-colored fillings are instead made of composite resin. This putty-like material is designed to seamlessly blend in with the rest of your smile. Plus, compared to metal fillings, less of your tooth structure has to be removed to make room for a tooth-colored filling. This leaves your tooth healthier in the long run.

Signs That You Need a Dental Filling

Sometimes, cavities don’t display symptoms in the early stages. However, contact your dentist in Conyers right away if you notice any of the following:

Toothache

One of the most common signs that you need a filling is pain in a specific tooth. This often indicates that decay has penetrated the tooth’s enamel and reached the sensitive layers underneath it. Whether it’s a constant throbbing toothache or a sharp pain when biting down, you should call your dentist.

Sensitivity

You may have naturally sensitive teeth for one reason or another. However, if the sensitivity worsens, it could mean that the inner layers of the tooth are exposed due to decay.

Hole or Dark Spot in the Tooth

If you can feel a hole in your tooth with your tongue or even see it in the mirror, then you should definitely visit your dentist.

Broken or Lost Old Fillings

Modern fillings are quite durable, but they don’t last forever. You might have noticed if yours loosened or fell out, but your tooth may also just feel inexplicably different.

Don’t Delay the Treatment Your Smile Needs!

Getting a dental filling isn’t exactly anyone’s favorite activity, but putting it off can result in your tooth becoming even more decayed. You might end up needing even more invasive (and expensive) treatment later on, such as a dental crown or a root canal. Just to be on the safe side, talk to your dentist if you notice any of the symptoms described above. That way, your smile will remain bright and healthy!

What to Do If Your Dental Crown Falls Off

May 3, 2021

If your tooth was knocked out, that’s obviously a much more time-sensitive situation than if your dental crown had fallen out. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t still call your dentist. After all, dental crowns in Conyers are designed to protect your teeth, so your oral health could be in jeopardy if one falls off. While you wait for your appointment, here’s what you need to know about handling a lost dental crown at home.

Is a Lost Dental Crown a True Emergency?

Theoretically, yes, but the urgency of your situation can vary. To find out whether you should hop in the car immediately or wait at home for a couple of days, take a closer look at the crown as well as the underlying tooth.

If parts of the crown are still attached, the tooth has sharp edges that could damage your soft tissues, or you’re experiencing severe pain, tell your dental team over the phone. They’ll get you an appointment as soon as possible. If, however, the crown came clean off and you’re not in pain, you can probably wait a couple of days to see your dentist. In the meantime, you can use a dab of toothpaste, denture adhesive, or petroleum jelly to temporarily reattach the crown to your tooth.

Avoid Chewing on That Side of Your Mouth

If your crown has fallen off, the tooth underneath it is now exposed and more vulnerable. Even if you can place the crown back onto the tooth, you should try your best to NOT chew with that area of your mouth. This will not only prevent excess pressure against the tooth, but it will also minimize the risk of food particles sticking to the tooth and causing cavities.

You should also stay away from foods that are particularly sticky or chewy, as they could make your crown come off again. The tooth might be sensitive to hot or cold foods and drinks (coffee, ice cream, etc.) so you may want to avoid those as well.

Be Careful with Your Oral Hygiene

Just because your crown fell off doesn’t mean you shouldn’t continue brushing and flossing. Instead, just be gentle when cleaning your mouth. Again, the tooth will likely be a bit more sensitive than usual.

When dealing with a lost dental crown, the most important thing to remember is to call your dentist in Conyers and give them as many details about the situation as possible. They’ll take it from there, but until then, keep the above tips in mind.
