What Causes White Spots to Form on the Teeth?
The exact cause of a white spot can vary. For example, some are a side effect of plaque calcifying in place and causing a cavity that needs to be filled. In other cases, the discoloration is a result of demineralization and remineralization; small amounts of the tooth’s structure can be lost due to acids and poor oral hygiene, and this gives lesions of calcium deposits a chance to form underneath the enamel’s surface. People who wear traditional braces tend to be at a higher-than-average risk for white spots since it’s much easier for plaque to build up around the brackets. In some cases, excessive exposure to fluoride can cause white spots to form; for that reason, it’s important to always remember to spit out your fluoride-based toothpaste instead of swallowing it when you’re done.
ICON Resin Infiltration
There are a few possible treatments for white spots, but generally speaking we’ll recommend ICON resin infiltration as a minimally invasive solution. To perform this procedure, we will gently scrub the tooth in question before applying an etchant that will open the pores of the tooth. This allows calcium and other ions that were previously blocked out to enter the tooth. Resin is then scrubbed onto the tooth in order to mask the existing lesion. The last step is to polish the tooth so that the surface is smooth again. The entire procedure usually takes around 45 minutes to an hour, and the end results have been shown to last for years at a time provided you continue to practice good oral hygiene.
Benefits of ICON Resin Infiltration
- Preservation: ICON allows you to save more of your tooth’s natural enamel, as opposed to other cosmetic procedures like porcelain veneers or metal-free crowns.
- Painless: The treatment causes little to no discomfort. There’s typically no need to numb the mouth with a local anesthesia.
- Cost-Effective: On average, ICON treatments are less costly than dental veneers and fillings, especially when there’s more than one tooth that has to be treated.
- Efficient: Compared to restorations that require at least two appointments to be placed, ICON can be performed in a single visit, meaning you won’t have to wait too long before you can start enjoying a brighter and more attractive smile.
